Types of Vegetarian – Fruitarian

by becomingavegetarian on February 24, 2010

I have to admit that I haven’t actually met a fruitarian although I do have online acquaintances that practice this form of vegetarianism. That means that I am sure that this type of vegetarian exists out there. If you lurk around enough forums, you will of course come across some…

Balancing your diet as a vegetarian is one of the most important tasks that you have that enable you to stay healthy. This is especially key if you are intending to be a fruitarian because your sources for obtaining calcium, iron, zinc, essential fatty acids, vitamins B, and D have just because severely restricted. If you do not pay close attention to what you are consuming you run the risk of running into a whole host of health issues.

The first thing that you need to do is establish what you believe a fruit is! This may sound a little crazy but what we generally term as fruit is not botanically correct. As a botanical class, fruit is a much wider term than you would assume. This means that as a fruitarian you could include items such as grains, nuts, squash, eggplant, cucumber, tomatoes and peppers. If you take on this view then you will have a much simpler time trying to meet your dietary needs.

I personally wouldn’t attempt this type of vegetarianism unless I had plenty of time to carry out meaningful research and planning for my dietary needs or unless I had the means to employ a nutritionist to tailor a special plan for me until the regime became second nature. I would also not attempt this without the inclusion of legumes and nuts in my diet; the latter really helps to obtain an adequate means of protein.

Children should not be put on this kind of diet without expert advice from a doctor and even then, it is more than likely to be met with an adverse reception by doctors/pediatricians/health workers and so on.

I cannot stress enough that out of all the varieties of vegetarianism out there that this is nutritionally just about the most difficult to get right.

If you are a fruitarian, feel free to add your comments and advice to this post for anyone who is considering this path.

Hey Majd,

I like the term vegetarian and to be honest. I’m not sure why we have the need to classify ourselves to quite such a degree. I’m looking for a Fruitarian to interview for this site, so if you stumble across one please let me know.

The lethargy is probably your body conserving energy from the change in diet! Are you fasting?
